  <dc:description>Bronze bust of Abraham Colles

Abraham Colles’ medical training started at Dr Stevens Hospital and the Foundling Hospital. He also spent time studying at the House of Industry Hospital before obtaining his Letters Testimonial from RCSI in 1795. Colles then travelled to Edinburgh University where he was conferred MD in 1797. Colles returned to Dublin and taught Anatomy and Surgery in rented rooms at the rear of a house in South King Street. During his residency at Dr. Steevens Hospital, Colles taught anatomy and surgery in the Hospital School. He resigned his post when in 1804 he was appointed Professor of Anatomy in RCSI having become a member of the College. Within RCSI Colles held the Chair of Surgery and the Chair of Anatomy and Physiology. He was elected to the Court of Assistants in 1800 and President of RCSI in 1802. Among Colles’ anatomical discoveries are the ‘Colles ligament’, the ‘Colles Fascia’ and the ‘Colles Fracture’.</dc:description>
