DescriptionPrint of Esculape in a mount and glazed frame. Approximate dimensions W 33, L 40, D 2. Text on the image reads 'taken from the ancient statue deposited in the museum at Paris and brought from Albania by the Emperor Napoleon. D.I.B.'. On the verso of the frame was secured document the size of a small letter, handwritten in ink. It is fragmented, discoloured and brittle. It has been relatively recently taped to wood (and possibly previously pasted to same wood), which had in turn been taped to the back of the frame mount. The bottom of the document is trimmed. For preservation, the letter has been removed from the picture mount but kept on its wood mount. Transcription: Aesculapius, in the [Heathen] Mythology, the God of Physic, was the son of Apollo and the nymph Coronis. He was educated by the centaur Chiron who taught him Physic by which means Aesculapius cured the most desperate diseases.
